Installation Proposal

For my installation, I would like to blend the confines of physical space with the quotidian experience that tends to remain removed from the gallery. I have been interested in using the hoop house as a space for many reasons. Firstly, it breaches the distinction between being an indoor and outdoor space. It is sheltered, but dirty. It is warm in the day and cool in the night. All the sounds from outside the bounds of the plastic cover seep in.

The experience of being in this space is much different to that of being in a gallery, and this is what draws me to it. I have found myself unamused by artists’ attempts to bring down the exclusivity and rigidity of the gallery space, and am much more interested in installations that bring atypical experiences to normal spaces.

To do this, I want to do some sort of projection on the walls of the hoop house that will be visible from the inside of the translucent plastic. I will have to do this after the sun is down, meaning that the amount of people who can come to this will be limited. However, I would argue that this kind of limitation is preferred to the financial burden that many art galleries pose.

I’m imagining that the experience of being inside the hoop house with the projections showing through would feel like being inside one of those recess parachutes: warm, colorful, and it only happens once. Really, I just want to return to the underside of the parachute.

The projections would be some kinds of videos that recall the unnatural feeling of being alive.

I will need a long extension cord, but luckily SLUG has one of those. I’m not proficient with a projector but I will figure it out.
