Three Objects: Physical Rumination Through Silent Artifacts

Three Objects: Physical Rumination Through Silent Artifacts

“i think i could make something really beautiful,” March 2026

Crochet, for me, has become a means of physically processing emotional pain and responding to situations that have been stuck on my brain. For a long time, I have had difficulty with letting things go. Crocheting these hovering thoughts, the things I wish I had said, and these situations that feel too ridiculous to be real has become part of my emotional processing and will culminate in a series that reflects my experience as a woman working within a heavily stereotyped medium. When I work, I think of the moments when I wish I had responded differently, and alter my own perceived reality through stitching.

Each of these pieces is made with lace weight cotton yarn. One was made with yarn I found at a thrift store and the following two use crochet thread from Michael’s. Patterns for the lace borders were sourced using Pinterest and the Antique Pattern Library. The three pieces are varying shades of off-white or beige. The largest one (“i think i could make something really beautiful”) is under three feet in width. Filet crochet is known to be a time intensive medium, and although these are small pieces they each took roughly two weeks to finish, aside from one which I finished in one weekend.

“i’m being cyberbullied by a covid baby,” March 2026

I am intrigued by the effect of juxtaposing a notoriously slow, labor intensive and antiquated medium with the casual language of digital spaces. The hybridity between the medium and the subject represented challenges notions of what some would consider a waste of time and what qualifies as art.
